IASIS Healthcare Multi Specialty Clinic is a Part of Phoenix’s History
The building that houses the IASIS Healthcare Multi Specialty Clinic was originally constructed in 1929 as the Sun Mercantile Building, by Wells & Sons and designed by E.W. Bacon. The building is located in what was once the heart of Phoenix’s warehouse district. The building is the first and only known warehouse built and owned by a Chinese-born businessman in Phoenix. Shing Tang established the Sun Mercantile Company, which supplied many neighboring towns with merchandise and helped Safeway and Bashas’, and many other businesses, to become established. It soon became the largest wholesale grocery house in Phoenix and was known as “the most diversified line of any general jobbing merchandise house in the state” (Arizona Republican, April 5, 1929). The building has been individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places since September 1985 and the Phoenix Historic Property Register since March 1987, and is now home to the state-of-the-art IASIS Healthcare Multi Specialty Clinic.
